of Rowan University football have a new source for team information
on the Internet. Tom Wilson ’90 has created
RowanFootball.com, a fan web site devoted to Profs football.
“While I was going to school I did some sports announcing
on WGLS and I saw how the football program was starting to make
a turnaround under Coach John Bunting,” says Wilson, a self-described
marketing and Internet entrepreneur who lives in Elmwood Park. “I
continued to follow the team after graduating and that progressed
into going to all the games and all of the Stagg Bowls.”
Wilson started tailgating and became interested in game information. “The idea to do the site came from a couple of other sites
I saw—D3football.com and mtunionfootball.com,” he explained.
The fan site officially launched in fall 2003. “My big goal
is to do a good job,” said Wilson, who was not a football
player during his college career. “I want the site to grow
and be a credible source of information.”
Wilson’s nonprofit site carries stories that preview each
game as well as postgame analysis, photographs, Brown and Gold
Club updates and historical information. Plus, audio game highlights
are supplied by Rowan Radio, WGLS-FM. Wilson says the site has
developed a very enthusiastic following.
“I went from no hits to 5,000 in the first week, to about
an average of 10-15,000 hits per week. It topped out at almost 20,000
the week of the playoffs,” said Wilson. “I’ve
gotten e-mails from Rowan graduates as far away as Russia and Hawaii
who tell me they love the site and that it helps keep them in touch
with what’s going on back at the college.”
