takes the helm
lawyer, coach, farmer, grandfather. And now Jack Collins 64,
67 is one of the most powerful public officials in New jersey.
Collins was elected Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly last
November and inaugurated in January. He sets the legislative agenda
and calendar of the house, selects members of committees, picks their
chairmen and presides over sessions of the Assembly.
The new speaker is a six-term Assemblyman from the 3rd District. He
has championed open space retention, farmland preservation, aid to
the developmentally disabled and job creation initiatives. As part
of the College staff, Collins teaches graduate classes in education-related
legal issues and school administration.
I am looking forward to my tenure as speaker, Collins
says. We will face many major issues this year that have a real
impact on peoples lives, including public education. It will
be a real challenge to find a fair way to pay for schools, but I am
happy I am in a position to help meet that challenge.
